The Rise of Kylo Ren #1 Article and Review

I have been on a mission to learn more about the conflicted soul that is Ben Solo/Kylo Ren. I decide to begin this journey with the limited comic book series- The Rise of Kylo Ren. Issue one is rated Teen and begins with the introduction of the Knights of Ren. The story quickly moves on to the events that take place after Luke and Ben have a confrontation as Ben awakens from his sleep, as seen in The Last Jedi. Ben is in the fiery ruins of the new Jedi Order's temple. Three Jedi students that had been off-world land in the temple square and ask Ben what happened. Ben asks them to leave, and wants no questions asked. The three Jedi become suspicious of Ben and believe him to be the cause of the disaster at the temple. A lightsaber battle ensues and Ben injures one of the Jedi students and flees in a space transport. Ben is closely followed by the three Jedi in their own transport. Ben disables the three Jedi's transport with a precise laser hit, and leaves their ship floating in space. As he escapes, Ben toils with the events that took place at the temple. Ben recalls the image of Luke standing over him with an ignited lightsaber, possibly ready to strike Ben down. He recalls bringing down the structure they are in around Skywalker burying Luke and apparently killing him. Ben also recalls, yelling in anger, from afar, at the still intact Jedi main temple structure moments after that. He stood emotional not knowing what was about to happen. The temple explodes from within and the blast knocks Ben to the ground. Ben gets up and yells NO! and runs towards the Jedi temple in hopes of saving it. Before he reaches it another blast from within throws Ben violently back. Back on his escape ship Ben's thoughts are interrupted by the navigational droid. Ben tells the droid their destination. The coordinates lead Ben's ship ELSEWHERE- to Snoke. Snoke is pleased that Ben came to seek him. Curiously, in this moment, Ben is worried about Snoke;s well-being and states- Look what Master Luke has done to you! I would love to see what transpired between Luke and Snoke for Ben to say this. Ironically Snoke insinuates to already know what happened between Luke and Ben at the temple. Ben assures Snoke that he killed Skywalker. Snoke warns Ben that Luke is not easily killed and hints that Luke may yet still be alive. Snoke asks Ben what he will do now that he is free of Luke Skywalker. Ben says he's been thinking about The Knights of Ren. That is where issue one ends. This first issue was well paced and the images felt true to the Ben Solo/Kylo Ren character. As I read the panels I could hear Adam Driver's voice as I read the words! I'm not sure if this is a testament to Driver's portrayal of Kylo Ren, or the writing style of the comic. In my opinion, it is a must read for any Kylo Ren fan. Issue 2 review will be next up as I learn and share more about how Ben Transforms into Kylo Ren. -Luis
